There are 1.5m IDPs in Nigeria -UN

Yesterday The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria Mr Daouda Toure pleaded for more resources to meet the needs of 1.5 million internally displaced people.
During the activities to mark this year’s World Humanitarian Day celebration with the theme: “Inspiring the World’s Humanity”in Abuja, Toure said:

“We appeal for more resources to respond particularly to the education and health needs of the displaced people.
“What is available is not commensurate with the situation on ground as the crisis in the North-East is not publicised enough.
“Nigeria is the major contributor to peace keeping in the world, so the international community need to contribute more resources, step up their support and restore the livelihood of these vulnerable people.
“We need to come and help them, help their brothers and sisters and help them get a better future for their children.’’

Man digs up Dad's grave to argue With corpse

An attempt to bury old wounds by digging up a corpse has landed a Kentucky man behind bars.
Michael May, 44, was arrested Tuesday evening after an officer saw him digging up a grave at a cemetery in Sanford, Kentucky.
May told the arresting officer he was trying to dig up the grave of his father so he could argue with him.

The arresting officer also said May seemed intoxicated and quoted Bible verses when confronted, according to Central Kentucky News.
May was charged with violating graves, public intoxication and marijuana possession and locked in the Lincoln County Jail.
In a bizarre jailhouse interview May told reporter Josh Breslow that a bible verse inspired him to dig up his dad.
Breslow: "Do you feel that you were violating a grave?"
May: "No, no. I see the truth.. he needs to be on the ground. Not under it."
May says his dad died 30 years ago. There are 13 people named May buried at the cemetery, but the only name fitting that timeline was a person named Willis Green May, WAVE3.com reports.

Former speaker rejects his appointment by Fayose

A former factional Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Dele Olugbemi, rejected his nomination by Governor Ayodele Fayose as a member of the House of Assembly Service Commission.
Olugbemi shunned the screening and confirmation of nominees on Wednesday but the four other nominees were confirmed by the Assembly.

Those whose nominations were confirmed are former Speaker, Olatunji Odeyemi (Chairman), Bode Ajewole, Mrs. Lanre Fajuyi and Muyiwa Fadahunsi.
The Leader of Government Business, Olatunji Akinyele, moved the motion for the amendment of the House of Assembly Service Commission Law 2003 (as amended) “to accommodate nominees from the three senatorial districts.”
It was the fourth amendment to the Ekiti State House of Assembly Service Commission Law.
This, according to the House, “is to ensure fairness to all the districts and to ensure equitable distribution of positions.”
Reacting to Olugbemi’s non-appearance and rejection of the appointment, the Speaker, Kola Oluwawole, said a nominee could not be forced to accept an offer.
Oluwawole said, “If you offer somebody an appointment and he says no, there will be a replacement because there are so many people yearning for this opportunity.
“People who are very intelligent and qualified are looking for this opportunity and government will ensure that another replacement is made.
“We stepped it down (on Tuesday) because we wanted to ensure that there is a balance in representation on the commission.
“It had to be stepped down to do some necessary adjustments to ensure equity and fair play because every segment of Ekiti State should be made to feel a sense of belonging.

Albino Foundation demands investigation into member’s death in Lagos

It was reported on this blog that 23-year-old albino, Ugochukwu Ugogbua, committed suicide on Sunday Aug 16th. Well yesterday his house was besieged by members of the Albino Foundation, who demanded to know what made him kill himself. There were rumours that Ugo had killed himself because his parents wanted him to join Jehovah's Witnesses, a claim his family has since denied.
The members of the Albino Foundation commiserated with the bereaved family then proceeded to the police station to enquire about the outcome of their investigation on the incident.

At Festac Police Division, Lagos State Coordinator of Albino Foundation, Mrs. Omolala Joseph, said:

“We are here on behalf of the national headquarters of Albino Foundation in Abuja to find out what exactly led to the death of our colleague. “Though he was not a registered member of the Foundation, he was an albino like us, therefore, we have a duty to pay a condolence visit to the family, counsel them and orientate them. “Things like this cannot just happen. We need to know the exact cause so as to help re-orientate others.”
A member of the family, who simply gave her name as Oluchi, said:
“We have read a lot of reports on my brother’s death. I want to categorically state that he did not kill himself because he was forced to become a Jehovah’s Witnesses member. “It was not also because he was stigmatised as an albino. The truth is that what led him into the act were powers beyond him and he never left any note for us concerning his death.”

Female rugby player dies from catastrophic brain injuries after tackle

A talented young rugby player died from catastrophic brain injuries over a month after she was injured in a tackle during a game, an inquest heard.
Tragic Sarah Chesters, 23, was playing for her ladies' rugby team on October 19 last year when she was bundled to the ground by a bigger opposition player.

The 5ft 2in full-back complained of pain to her collarbone but managed to walk off the pitch and even declined an offer of an ambulance or hospital treatment.

In the coming weeks she also carried on making a daily two-hour commute from her home in Milton, Stoke-on-Trent, for her job as a research intern with Women in Sport in London.
But an inquest heard the Masters' degree graduate took a turn for the worse after she started being sick and feeling dizzy on November 13.
She was rushed to Royal Stoke University Hospital where tests revealed she had suffered a stroke.

Her conditioned rapidly worsened and she passed away on November 21 after coming off a life support machine.
Yesterday, North Staffordshire Coroners Court heard Sarah died from brain injuries which were probably triggered by the tackle as she played for Longton RUFC.
Recording a verdict of accidental death, North Staffordshire Coroner Ian Smith said: 'She was tackled, she went down.
'When the injury occurred is not totally clear.
